Resonance Structures/ I/
Lenght of Time (‘s Uncertain Wing)/
12 Phrase Rhythms for a Bow
is a rhythmic composition for the flexible structure of a bow.
As a resonating body, the bow has its own particular frequency.
An elliptical bow stands on its two end-points. The bow is made from a band of sheet aluminum, stretched into a tense arc by a length of steel wire. One side of the bow is attached to the ground with a hinge. On that same side, an excenter motor, connected to the bow by a spring, sets the metal band into motion. The shifting rhythms of the movements are manipulated through a micro-controller.
Impulse, energy and resonance provide a temporal configuration of stimuli that generate a rhythmic series of consecutive and interrelated movements and resulting sounds. The twelve-part composition has a duration of one year.
The work’s dynamic structure engages the audience in a direct and physical manner, as the rhythmic movements effect the audiences own visceral sensations. A pas de deux thus emerges in which the work and the viewer are intertwined.
